Nice post, normally the science blows my mind!

I wasted a lot of time and cash on excess protein in the past, and it all seems a little silly now. Workout to build muscle, watch what you eat to lose fat. It almost sounds too simple. But it works.

I’ve gone through phases of protein obsession but How Much Protein really opened me up to the real science behind some of the protein myths (how much per day, timing after workouts, etc.). I think most people naturally get enough protein without stressing about it (unless you’re living off pasta or a hardcore vegetarian).

Protein is the most overated nutrient known to man. We have only 3 reasons for eating protein: growth, maintenance and repair. If you’re an adult – you don’t need protein for growth. Maintenance is very easy: you don’t have to worry unless you’re starving. Even if you’re trying to build muscle only a very slight gain in protein is needed. Now to repair: if you’re a sedentary adult male (most of us are) you can EASILY meet this requirement by just eating. Non-pregnant women never, ever have to worry about it. IF you have a protein-wasting disease (cancer, etc.) you need about as much MORE than if you were a pregnant woman – again, very little more.
I’m a 3rd generation vegan and a martial artist – able to wield a 6.2 lb. sword faster than the eye could follow. My father was an olympic runner and was the 4rth fastest runner in Europe. My brother was a famous “voetbal” player – a famous goal keeper for both Sparta and Ajax. It is the wide influence of the dairy, egg and beef industries which have made such a big deal about protein – a substance that, overused, can cause many problems from which Americans suffer.
As a clinical physiologist and biochemst in private practice for over 38 years I have yet to see a healthy patient who suffers from protein deficiency.

Dr. Van are you a 3rd generation vegan or vegetarian. I’ve seen posts from you elsewhere that say you eat eggs and were vegetarian, not vegan..just curious. Eggs certainly provide additional protein that one would not find in a vegan diet. I do agree with you that protein is far too over-rated.

How does looking at a picture of a hairy, dirty, 4-legged, caged animal make you want to eat a hamburger? just wondering…
