Funny stuff. There’s only so much progress that can be made in 30 days. I’m more of the slow and steady wins the race type of guy. Yo-yo dieting and exercising just doesn’t feel like the natural way to go about doing things.

Exactly… and those who follow the yo-yo dieting do exactly that – they lose some then gain it all back. That’s funny you mentioned the slow & steady racer, I’m definitely the tortoise when it comes to racing too – metaphorically, of course! π

I thought this was going to be a list of at-home workout routines that you can’t stand. I’m almost sorry that you didn’t tear some worthless routines apart, like the Shake Weight or something. Another name for this post could have been “30 Things That Typical Americans do Every Day”.

Ahhh, you’re right, that would definitely be a fun post! But hey, what’s wrong with the Shake Weight? π

How about; announce to everyone that you are going to get in shape?
So many times I’ve seen people with good intentions meet with resistance from their colleagues and “friends” when they want to improve themselves. From waving food in front of them, to telling them they can’t do it. Its pretty sad!
Methinks its best to keep quiet in the early stages, until you build up a head of steam

I have been there and done all 30 of the ways to stay out of shape. Just recently my wife asked if I would help her get back in to shape because she can’t stay focused with me doing as I want and I said “Let’s get started on Monday” that was about 3 Mondays ago.

Dave, I definitely agree with you- weightloss should never be a race. Using faddy methods to shed pounds may produce positive initial results but almost always fails in the long term. Very restrictive diets and unrealistic exercise regimes are just not sustainable so will inevitably break down at some point. The resulting weight gain not only takes the dieter back to square one, it also exerts a powerful negative impact on their attitude. Feelings of failure are never going to be beneficial for somebody attempting such a difficult challenge, but are inevitable if sensible weightloss programmes are not followed. It’s about making a lifestyle change, not loosing the most weight in the shortest possible time.

How about ‘setting unrealistic goals’ as an addition to your list?

Hey Kevin,
Great List. I agree with the slow, steady approach. I usually tell people that it takes years for most to get out of shape, so don’t expect to reverse that in a few weeks or a month.

That’s great advice Fred … when it comes to the tortoise and the hare, I’m a fan of the tortoise.

I think this post is great although I think “Follow advice from the unhealthy” should be near the number 1 slot. To many times do I see unhealthy people trying to get back in shape surrounding themselves with other unhealthy people. It goes back to the saying that misery loves company and nothing can kill your healthy plans better than someone that doesn’t know what they are talking about and doesn’t really want to see you succeed. If you succeed then someone might have to take a closer look at themselves and they won’t like what they see.

I disagree with #23, Play lots of video games. It all depends on the type of game and the kind of shape.
Playing lots of non-physical video games can get you into shape, a nice round shape, probably not the shape you are looking for.
If, for example, your favorite game is Dance Dance Revolution, then I think that could help you get into shape, the right kind of shape.
